The Kindergarten lessons will use the controlled level of inquiry. According to Callison, in controlled inquiry, the teacher and/or media specialist chooses the topic and identifies materials that students will use to address their questions. Students are often involved with specific exercises and activities to meet particular learning outcomes such as retelling stories, evaluating sources, or comparing approaches. Students often have a specific product such as a Venn diagram, paragraph, or poster. Students will be learning about the different parts of a Butterfly life cycle. The specific product will be a journal.

The 2nd grade lessons will use the guided level of inquiry. According to Callison, in a guided inquiry, student have more flexibility in their resources and activities however they are expected to create a prescribed final product such as a report or presentation. Students will be given different options to present what they have learned about the Butterfly Life Cycle.

The lessons that I have provided are for Kindergarten and 2nd grade students. These lessons will help them learn about the Life Cycle of Butterflies. While students are learning about the same topic, the 2nd grade students will learn more in depth about each stage of the life cycle.

The Kindergarten students will have more controlled learning and the 2nd graders will be guided but have more flexibility.
